SVT secure management author Jim McGrath for SVT graduation

SVT hold a free annual graduation for all of our successful candidates. This includes guest speakers from the awarding bodies such as City and Guilds, Chartered Management Institute, Institute of Leadership and Management and IOSH to name a few. The champagne reception is a great event that all enjoy and a very proud family day out. This gives SVT candidates a chance to formally graduate with a cap and gown. Candidates will this year get to meet Jim McGrath who is the author of a management book we send to all candidates studying a SVT Management course and get your book signed.

About Jim McGrath

Dr Jim McGrath left school at 16 and trained to be an accountant. After qualification he worked in both the private and public sectors for 25 years as a senior manager. Looking for a new challenge he became a university lecture in a faculty of education where he taught management and leadership in education to mainly post-graduate students.

Jim has always believed that his greatest talent as a writer is the ability to express complex ideas in an accessible, clear and simple manner. He has applied this principle to all eight non-fiction books he has written. It is particularly apparent in his four popular management texts, the first of which was The Little Book of Big Management Theories (LBBMT).  A new, and extended second edition of LBBMT has just been published by Pearson’s.

Jim is currently writing his fourth non-procedural police novel set in 1960's Birmingham, a time and a place he knows well. The first book in the series, A Death in Winter: 1963 will be published in paperback by Inknbeans Press, California in early December 2017.

Despite his love of fiction writing Jim continues to develop new ideas for possible management books. He is currently discussing ideas with Cheryl Watson at Specialist Vocational Training which will be of real benefit to students following Level 3 to 7 NVQ Management Courses.

The Little Book of Big Management Theories

As someone who obtained all his qualification by part-time study while holding down a full time job Jim has enormous respect for anyone following the NVQ Pathway. While combining work with study is difficult he is convinced that the mixture of leaning while doing is the best way to learn management skills. A knowledge of theory alone will never make a great manager. The NVQ approach also breeds lifelong learners who know that they must constantly update their skills.
